Since its inception in 1999, the Blue Ridge
Orchestra's mission has been to perform
symphonic
music for its communities and schools
as
well as spotlighting regional talent.
In
conjunction with the Asheville Ballet,
the
group has reached over 10,000 school
children
in concerts introducing the four families
of the orchestra with performances
of Peter
and the Wolf. In past seasons, local
greats
like bluegrass superstar Bobby Hicks,
pianist
Hwa-Jin Kim and violinist Ginger Kowal
have
all appeared with BRO. This year, along
with
Bill Martin, the orchestra will showcase
Asheville's renowned harpist William
Jackson
in an "All Celtic" concert
on Sunday,
March 2, 2008 at 3:00PM in Diana Wortham;
on Saturday, April 26, 2008, 7:30PM
in Lipinsky
will be featured violin prodigy, Stefani
Collins, from the NC School of the
Arts in
a performance of the Sibelius violin
concerto.
BRO has also brought symphonic music
to a
variety of our local communities, including
Waynesville, Burnsville, Columbus,
Mars Hill
and of course, here in Asheville.
