Hwa-Jin KimThe Blue Ridge Orchestra, under the direction of Ronald D. Clearfield, will present an evening of Spanish inspired music featuring piano soloist Hwa-Jin Kim performing Manuel de Falla’s beautiful “Nights in the Gardens of Spain” for piano and orchestra as well as the Overture to Bizet’s Carmen, Chabrier’s Espana, and Ravel’s Bolero at Diana Wortham Theatre on Friday, April 24th, at 8:00 p.m.

The final concert of the Blue Ridge Orchestra will also include Chabrier’s Espana, a one-movement orchestral piece with hints of guitar rhythms, inspired by the French composer’s travels in Spain. The orchestra will perform Ravel’s famous Bolero, heard everywhere from the orchestra hall to the soundtracks of major motion pictures. Finally, the audience will be treated to excerpts from Bizet’s once-controversial and now much-beloved Carmen.


Ron Clearfield, conductor and music director of the Blue Ridge Orchestra, is a local talent who works professionally as a cellist, composer, conductor and recording artist. An honors graduate from the New England Conservatory of Music, Ron also conducts the Asheville Youth Orchestra. Formerly a member of the Indianapolis Symphony and the Miami Philharmonic, he's also now a member of the Asheville Symphony.

Since its beginnings in 1999, The Blue Ridge Orchestra has established itself in the arts and education community with annual presentations of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf in conjunction with the Asheville Ballet to thousands of elementary school children. The orchestra, composed of fine musicians from Western North Carolina, performs in venues throughout the region with concerts ranging from light, popular fare to masterworks concerts of challenging orchestral literature.

In addition to the collaborations with Jamie Laval, the March 22 concert will also feature champion guitarist Owen Morrison and include selected Celtic favorites performed by the Blue Ridge Orchestra
